soloman islands earthquake
(Tuesday, 3 April 2007)
as geog shen i haf to blog abt dis unfortunate event dat took place ytd in de southern pacific north-east of australia... an earthquake wid de magnitude of 8.1 on de moment magnitude scale hit de ocean 40km from st george's island at 4:39 a.m. singapore time, causing a tsunami 10 metres high to hit de soloman islands 20 mins after de earthquake struck, killing no less den 24 ppl n destroying more den 13 villages... rescuers r trying to reach other islands thus death toll expected to rise... de tsunami oso hit papua new guinea... 24 ppl may seem little to us but in a small state lyk soloman islands whr de population is onli 478,000 (abt 10% of spore pop.), it is a disaster dat caused mre den 1% of its ppl to be homeless... dis earthquake is caused by de convergence of the pacific plate with de indo-australian plate, building up pressure due to friction... 20 mins was nt enuf for de pacific tsunami warning centre in hawaii to send a tsunami warning report to de soloman island b4 de tsunami struck...
u may tink singapore is safe frm all dis natural disaster but it is nt true... in a recent case study report done by me, singapore is well protected by de neighbouring countries in 7 directions... malaya protecting us in the north; sumatra to de west, north-west n south-west; java in de south, south-east n south-west; borneo in de east; but dere is a major loop-hole which is de north-east, whr we r exposed to de south china sea *unless u tink tekong n ubin can save us...* as we all noe earthquakes r frequent in the phillipines whr the pacific plate, eurasian plate n indo-australian plate mits, its a matter of time b4 a tsunami hits us... so dun tink u r veh safe... especially ppl living in de east...
