“Hwa Chong well-positioned to be epitome of world-class education”
(Soh Yi Da, ST Forum Online, 10/4)
Positive letter by HCI student Soh Yi Da in reference to an earlier
commentary in ST (“Great vision or plain hype”, Dr Andy Ho, 7/4),
wherein Ho wrote about HCI’s goals of producing a prime minister, a
top entrepreneur and a Nobel laureate scientist.
Soh expressed his disagreement with Ho’s label of HCI’s goals
as “mere braggadocio”, and attested to the quality of education HCI
provided, having been schooled in HCI for five-and-a-half years, as
well as being in HCI’s pioneer IP (integrated programme) batch. Soh
also made note of HCI’s firm commitment to its “mission of producing
leaders in research, industry and government”.
Soh wrote glowingly of his alma mater’s rich history of 88 years,
and the dedicated teachers who inculcated successive batches of HCI
students with sound moral principles. Soh also drew attention to the
strong senior-junior bond among students, the embracing of Western
ideas while holding true to oriental values, and HCI’s culture of
open dialogue. Soh made mention of HCI students’ ability to “move
beyond talk” to translate their ideas into action, as exemplified
through the school’s “vast community outreach” and students’ civic
activism, which were reaffirmed by the school administration’s
support of student initiatives.
Soh related how he treasured most of all the “high level of
empowerment” that every HCI student had to venture into new
frontiers and to establish their school as a “forerunner” in various
arenas. Soh concluded by saying that HCI was well-positioned to be
the “epitome of world-class education”.
